Winter lighting – October to March
In November 2022, we installed seasonal tree lights on both Union Street and The Horsefair. These are in addition to our festive lighting.
In the first year, these lights were switched on every evening from 4pm to 11pm. The feedback was positive with people saying they made the areas feel safer after dark; they also asked if they could stay on until it starts to get lighter again in the mornings, so in 2023, this change was made.
The lights are energy efficient LEDs, so the cost to run them is minimal. We have had to make a few repairs for 2024, and, again as a result of feedback, we have switched them on a few weeks earlier. They will now be on from 4pm until 8am until the clocks go forward at the end of March.
Our festive lighting, comprising canopies stretching across Broadmead West, Merchant Street North and South, and The Horsefair (between Primark and Sparks), is switched on each year when the Christmas Market opens.
